At Argo we are pleased to offer ‘gas and air’ sedation. This involves breathing a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a mask on your nose, to help you feel relaxed during your dental treatment.

Inhalation sedation being given through a nasal mask at Argo Dental Clinic

You stay awake and in control

You will remain conscious and will be able to talk to us throughout your treatment. We can adjust the amount of nitrous oxide given to you during the appointment as needed.

It is a very safe form of sedation and recovery is quick, meaning you don’t have to bring an escort and you can carry on with your day after your appointment.

What inhalation sedation provides

01

Anxiety relief

It lowers stress and provides a calm or floating sensation.

02

Pain management

It raises your pain threshold, meaning more comfortable treatment. Local anaesthetic will still be used as well, as required.

03

Gag reflex control

It helps suppress a sensitive gag reflex, making dental work much easier to tolerate.

It is helpful for patients with

  • Stress or fear about dental treatment
  • Strong gag reflexes
  • Needle phobia
  • Medical conditions that could be triggered by stress, such as asthma or epilepsy
  • Movement disorders, such as cerebral palsy or Parkinson’s disease
  • Additional needs, such as autism or sensory processing disorder
  • Potentially difficult treatment to be carried out

This type of sedation is helpful for both adults and children, from around 5 years old and older.

How to arrange it

If you are interested in having treatment under sedation, you can book in for a consultation with our sedation dentist, Katie Woon Sam. Or, if you have your own dentist already, they can refer you to have your treatment under sedation with us.
